The Blessed Month of Dhul Hijjah

A Synopsis of Du’a 45 from Sahifa Sajjadiyya

April 2, 2025 / editor
Praise and Glorification of Allah: In this supplication, Imam Zain al-Abideen (a) begins by praising Allah for His kindness towards His servants. He rewards them for praising and thanking Him when it is really He who has inspired us to do so. Furthermore, it is He who guided us to the right path yet He still rewards us for following it.

Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness: Repentance follows confession and regret – only when one has remorse for his misdeeds can he truly gain forgiveness from Allah. Imam al-Sajjad (a) says that remorse is “firmly knitted in our hearts” and pardon is “sincerely uttered by
our tongues” as we confess and repent for our wrongs. We also ask forgiveness for our
shortcomings and negligence in this blessed month.

The Imam (a) said to him, “O Aba Salt, the greater part of the month of Sha’bān has elapsed. Try to make up for the neglect of the past days of this month by compensating in what remains of it. Devote yourself to what is beneficial
for you. Supplicate a lot and plead for forgiveness. Recite the Holy Qur’an as much as you can and repent for your sins so that when the Blessed month of Ramadhan sets in, you will have purified yourself. Fear Allah and trust Him in everything. O Allah, bless Ali ibnMuhammad, the Legatee of the legatees, the Imam of the Godwary, scion of the leaders of the faith and (God’s) testament to all the creatures.
O Allah, inasmuch as You made him a source of light for the faithful, and he gave them the good news of Your plentiful reward and warned them of Your retribution and punishment for sins, reminded them of Your signs, allowed what you have permitted, and forbade what You have prohibited, expounded Your laws and obligations, urged them on to Your worship, enjoined them to obey You and forbade them from disobeying You, bless him with the best of blessings, You have granted to any of Your friends and the progeny of Your prophets! O God of all the Worlds!

O Allah, send blessings on Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad In the Name of Allah, the Most Kind and the Most Merciful! O You from whom I expect every good, and seek safety from Your displeasure in the face of every evil! O You who give abundantly for that which is trivial! O You who grant to whomever requests You. O You who give also to those who neither ask you nor know You, out of Your compassion and mercy! Grant me, for my petition to You, all the good of the world and all the good of the Hereafter! Save me, for my petition to You, from all the evils of the world and the Hereafter, for what You grant is never deficient, and enhance me out of You grace,
O All-munificent! O Majestic and Munificent! O All-generous bestower of blessings,
O dispenser of favours and bounties, save my grey hair from the Fire! O Allah, send blessings on Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad.
